I thought I'd share a couple of photos with you all - we are still unpacking so it's just a few snapshots to thank you for your patience and show you what we've been doing all this time. I hope you like it. The old part of the house is a 17th century cottage which we've managed to restore parts of although the entire structure had to be reinforced with steel which was sad, and also very expensive. I'll go into more detail about the renovation on nest egg blog when I get time, so, for now, take a look.
When I arrived at the house last Wednesday there was a small stack of cards waiting for me from our lovely neighbours on the lane. It was the best welcome ever.
My labour of love. I bought this oak sideboard in an auction. It was originally a dresser but when I came across it, the top was missing. It's a perfect fit for this alcove, as you can see, still pictures everywhere and stuff to unpack.
One of my favourite bits about the cottage is the exposed oak beams. They were all covered up when we bought the house, and it was only thanks to our amazing plasterer we found them, exposed them and cleaned them up.
A gift from a client a while back. Finally they can sit on the mantlepiece above the inglenook.
One shelf of four, all cookbooks. And they are next to the kitchen which is absolutely heaven because in our old house there was no room for them downstairs so they were banished to a spare room. It's good to have them back and close by - I've missed these guys!
This is our bedroom - it has a chimney in it! My husband spent 4.5 days with a succession of wire brushes cleaning off whatever it was that was on it. It's now sealed and all I've got left to do is another layer of caulking and re-painting at the bottom (not visible in picture). I like it as an original feature but it did cause me to have an awful night terror on our 2nd night - apparently I woke up screaming "they're coming out of the chimney! THEY'RE COMING OUT OF THE CHIMNEY!!!!" Whatever "they" were, I was soon fast asleep again and none the wiser. My poor husband was absolutely terrified.
Okay I'm off to the house to feed the little pug and put the supper on. In all my cookery book joy I found an old recipe for cape malay chicken which I haven't made for ages so I'm giving that a spin tonight. I might post some pics on Instagram if you're on that, the handle is @westeggUK.
